Tips are easy. A full design map is not. Many courses skip chapters, stay cold-only, or sell a pattern as the whole system.
A PDC is an internationally recognized 14-chapter design curriculum. Ethics. Principles. Methods. Patterns. Climatic factors. Trees. Water. Soils. Earthworks. Humid tropics. Drylands. Cool/cold climates. Aquaculture. Social and economic systems.
A Canadian address does not replace those chapters. Ask for the full map by name.
Canada has cold winters. It also has drought, flood, fire risk, heat spikes, and wet coasts that are changing.
A serious PDC does not focus Zone 3–6 as the whole course. It prepares you for any climate, and for climate change. The plant list changes. The thinking does not.
Many teachers skip chapters. Aquaculture disappears. Social systems get a nod. Drylands get skipped because “we’re cold.” Prefer teachers who cover all 14 chapters, even the ones that feel far from your backyard today.
In-person intensives can be excellent for immersion and dirt time. Online programs let you design your place while you learn. Neither format wins by default. Curriculum completeness and teacher fit do.
