Hey folks. The 12 permaculture principles (David Holmgren) are decision tools. Not wallpaper. They help you design when the weather, the budget, and the land refuse to stay simple. They live inside a wider map: a PDC is an internationally recognized 14-chapter curriculum. Principles are one piece.
DRAFT — unpublished. Soft CTAs only.
Tips are easy. A full design map is not. Many courses skip chapters, stay cold-only, or sell a pattern as the whole system.
1 Observe and interact. 2 Catch and store energy. 3 Obtain a yield. 4 Apply self-regulation and accept feedback. 5 Use and value renewable resources and services. 6 Produce no waste.
7 Design from patterns to details. 8 Integrate rather than segregate. 9 Use small and slow solutions. 10 Use and value diversity. 11 Use edges and value the marginal. 12 Creatively use and respond to change.
These 12 are not cold-climate-only rules. They travel from wet coasts to dry interiors. A swale is a geometry lesson under catch-and-store and respond-to-change. Placed well, it can help in drought or flood.
Memorizing the list, then designing nothing. Or taking a course that teaches principles but skips half the 14-chapter PDC map. Many teachers skip chapters. Pick someone who covers all 14 and whose style you like. Even if that teacher is not P3.
